Do these sound familiar?
- I struggle to focus when studying. - I struggle to submit assignments on time. - It takes me a long time to begin an assignment. - I tend to procrastinate on tasks - I struggle to motivate myself to get the work done. - I have so much going on and don’t know where to start. - My work is never at the standard I want it. - I struggle to manage my time. - My study techniques could be better.
…if yes, coaching can help.
My personalized coaching gets at the root causes.
You are clearly capable of succeeding in your learning. However, many students have challenges with their executive functioning skills - those mental processes that enable us to perform everyday tasks such as planning, focusing our attention, storing information in working memory, and switching between tasks. While executive functioning begins to develop in childhood, many students are made aware of challenges with their executive functioning in high school or college. Coaching helps by building strategies to target your cognitive processes so that you are capable of managing your own learning.
…and then there’s self-regulation
Being a successful student requires you to regulate your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Important to high school and college, self-regulation enables a student to plan ahead (for example, setting goals); monitor their learning (what is working, what isn’t working), and then evaluate their performance to better understand what can be used in the future. The good news is that self-regulation can be taught and developed in students, especially through the personalized support and guidance that academic coaching provides. It is my mission to increase these skills, and to develop your ability to be a self-regulated learner with improved metacognitive skills that will enable you to think about the way you think!
How Coaching Can Help
My personalized coaching provides a supportive and non-judgmental environment to focus on your academics. Whatever challenges you may be experiencing, coaching provides an opportunity to share your roadblocks so that we can brainstorm solutions that will help. My coaching has proven to support students with their ability to apply, monitor, and evaluate study strategies and techniques that deepen their learning of course material while increasing their confidence in their own abilities as learners (self-efficacy). Further, my coaching provides an important form of accountability to help you follow through on the strategies we discuss in our sessions. This means that you’ll have a trusted partner to support you throughout your academic journey so that you continue on your personal road to success.
My 5 Step Process
My approach to coaching utilizes a 5 step process to help you maximize your personal and academic potential. Hundreds of students in my care have seen first-hand results with this approach - starting with your awareness, through to your application and evaluation of new strategies to maximize your academic potential.
-
My coaching starts by cultivating your awareness. You bring such unique strengths, insights, goals, interests and dreams to coaching and this is when we begin to identify how you learn and study, what “success” means to you, and what you wish to prioritize in our coaching sessions.
-
In the problem solving stage, we begin to address your unique challenges and roadblocks to reaching your full academic potential. We will spend time discussing the nature of your challenges, the impact of those challenges on your academic performance, and how those challenges “show up” for you. We will also discuss what strategies, if any, you have used to address your challenges
-
At this stage, we will begin to create new academic plans and strategies. My belief is that different students require different strategies that work for them and through coaching, you will gain insight into those that work best for you. What’s more, we will discuss evidence-based strategies that are backed by cognitive psychology.
-
At this stage, you will begin to apply new strategies. Whether you’re in the classroom, doing homework, writing a paper, or studying for an upcoming exam, you will benefit from new strategies to maximize your studying and learning. Through coaching, you will also learn how to monitor the effectiveness of your strategies to ensure they continue to work.
-
At this final stage, we will evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies you have been using. What’s working? Where is there room for improvement? At this stage, you will also grow your metacognitive skills - that is, your ability to think more clearly about your own thinking. This will help you to become a more effective independent learner moving forward
